Englefield Proudly Supports One Tree Hill College’s Trade Academy Initiative

At Englefield, we believe in giving back to the community and supporting initiatives that foster hands-on learning and skill development. That’s why we were thrilled to contribute our bathroom products to One Tree Hill College’s remarkable Trade Academy project.

One Tree Hill College, known for its innovative approach to vocational education, purchased a house for just one dollar. This house, now situated on the school grounds, serves as a live project where students can apply their trade skills in a real-world setting.

The initiative has proven to be a resounding success, offering students invaluable experience while revitalizing a 1970s state house. Charlotte McKeon, the teacher spearheading this ambitious project, shared, “We knew students would be interested, but the level of enthusiasm has exceeded our expectations. It’s incredible to see how students who may not have been engaged in other subjects are thriving here.”

The senior students at One Tree Hill College work on the house in small groups during their trades classes and even dedicate their Saturdays to the project. This hands-on approach has sparked a genuine passion for trades among the students.

McKeon noted, “One student is now considering a career in trades after discovering her interest in sill tape application.” The renovation project has been a gradual process, supported by Kāinga Ora and local community sponsors. Acting Principal Emma Beale explained, “We started with smaller projects like outdoor seating and planter boxes. It’s been incredibly rewarding for both the students and the community.”

The project’s success is a testament to the support from the local community, including businesses, the Rotary Club, and various educational and industry organizations. Patrick Dougherty, Kāinga Ora’s General Manager of Construction and Innovation, praised the initiative, saying, “Seeing an old state house get a new life and contribute to education is a great example of waste minimization and community support.”

Once completed, the house will be auctioned off, with the proceeds going towards funding similar projects in the future. At Englefield, we’re proud to support such a meaningful initiative that empowers students and strengthens the community. Stay tuned for more updates on this inspiring project, and join us in celebrating the incredible work being done at One Tree Hill College!
