New packageing reduces environmental footprint by more than 50%

A bold new packaging initiative has seen one of New Zealand’s leading bathroom suppliers improve four of its key sustainability measures by more than 50%!

Englefield has redesigned the packaging for its best-selling acrylic shower walls – including the flat, corner Contour and Contour Plus models – removing all previous polystyrene packaging and greatly reducing the amount of cardboard used.

From September 2019 the shower walls are being shipped with grade 4C fluted cardboard upper and lower carton caps (all made in New Zealand), while the base protector insert will be made of double fluted cardboard. All of this packaging can be folded and placed in kerbside recycling bins.

Aligning with parent company Kohler’s global sustainability goals (including net zero carbon emissions by 2035) this new packaging realises multiple savings.

The two-sided acrylic shower walls will now fit eight on a pallet, instead of the original six, saving valuable space. The new packaging also enables easy inspection of the walls while in transit with an integrated viewing window at the base of the wall. On the rare occasion there is damage, this is the spot where it usually occurs.

Most significant of all though are the overall benefits to the environment that this new packaging delivers. They span four key categories –

  • 60% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions
  • 55% reduction in water usage
  • 57% reduction in solid waste
  • 55% reduction in toxicity

This is the first of several environmental sustainability measures planned by Englefield.
